Definition of the West Palaearctic region:

The eastern border is formed by the Ural mountains (Russia), and passes southwards through the Caspian Sea and the north-western part of the Persian Gulf; the southern border runs through the Sahara desert and integrates the massifs of Hoggar Kibo, Air, Tibesti and Ennedi as well as a large part of Saudi Arabia. Canary Islands, of course, are part of the West Palaearctic region too.

[In our photo gallery you can find some species occurring in areas adjacent to the West Palaearctic region. These comprise Pakistan and the new Central Asian republics of the former Soviet Union - like Kazakhstan, Tadjikistan (Tajikistan), Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkmenistan (cf. the small map). The fauna of these countries is closely related to the study area.]
