Populations of Phytoecia compacta compacta are extremely variable in size and habitus, whole taxon needs deep taxonomic revision with use of the modern genetic and chemometric methods. The upper picture shows differences among specimens from Iran and SE Turkey. Turkish specimens, which are subjects of "live" photography are massive, dark and mostly with reduced pubescence. Also the host plants are different (Solenanthus × Echium). Species was moved into a newly estabilished subgenus Paracoptosia by Mikhail Danilevsky in 2017 [✩]. According to M. Rejzek et al. [❖] in SE Turkey Phytoecia (Paracoptosia) compacta compacta develops in Solenanthus stamineus (Boraginaceae).

The depicted living beetles and mounted ♀T were collected on Solenanthus stamineus in summit plateaus of Nemrut Dagi Mt. (Adiyaman prov., Anatolia, SE Turkey) in June 2011.Mounted beetles (♂I / ♀I) were collected on Echium sp. in Askestan (اسكستان) village environs (1750 m a.s.l., Ardabīl province, Iran) on May 27-29, 2019.
