Lioderina linearis, a South-East European species reaching Central Europe in its northern borders of occurence (Austria, Hungary, Slovakia), has been described from Corfu island (Greece) as Callidium lineare by Clemens Hampe in 1871 [▽]. The species was considered, especially in Central Europe, an absolute rarity by entomologists and collectors for decades. However, after clarifying its biology, it was found that the taxon is relatively common in South-Eastern Europe, but it is a nocturnal species with a hidden way of life. L. linearis develops in dying of freshly dead thin twigs of the suitable host trees, especially in Prunus species. Life-cycle 2 years. Larval development was in detail described in work of Onřej Sabol published in 2000 [✧]. Adults, active from late May to early August, are crepuscular/nocturnal. During daylight they can be beaten from the host tree branches and at night collected using light traps [❖].

Body length:6 - 8 mm
Life cycle:2 years
Adults in:late May - early August
Host plant:polyphagous in deciduous trees (Prunus spp., Pyrus, Juglans regia and Acer undulatum [✧]), also reported from Abies cephalonica.
Distribution:Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Greece, Croatia, Hungary, Macedonia, Slovakia, Romania, Turkey

The depicted living beetle was photographed in Hungary on July 27, 2013
