Phytoecia (Neomusaria) balcanica, a rare but widely distributed species occuring in Balcan peninsula, Turkey and Near East, has been described from Sliven environs (Bulgaria) as Saperda balcanica by Imre Frivaldszky in 1835 [✮]. According to Martin Rejzek et al. [❖] in Turkey Phytoecia (Neomusaria) balcanica develops in Salvia sclarea (Lamiaceae).

A new subspecies of Phytoecia (Neomusaria) balcanica, P. (N.) balcanica skoupyi, has beed described by Mikhail L. Danilevsky from Iran in 2021 [✳].

Body length:	8 - 13 mm
Life cycle:	1 year
Adults in:	April - June
Host plant:	sages (Salvia spp.) - e.g. Salvia sclarea
Distribution:	Bulgaria, Greece, Crete, Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Iran

The depicted mounted beetles were collected in: ♂ - Saraycık village environs (Gümüşhacıköy district, Amasya province, Turkey) on June 2, 1992; ♀ - Derebük village environs (N39°35′ E39°54′; ~1250 m a.s.l, 11 km N of Pülümür, Üzümlü district, Erzincan drovince, Turkey) on June 19, 2002.
