Rhagium bifasciatum, a widely distributed montane and submontane forest species occuring from Iberian Peninsula to Caucasus, is polyphagous in both coniferous and deciduous trees. Larvae, unlike other species of the genus, do not develop under the bark, but inside of the dead very rotten wood. Pupal cells are in the wood, sometimes directly at the surface, mostly in wood (up to 15-20 cm deep). The larval galleries are clogged by frass, and later by wooden chips up to 10 mm long. Pupation in wood at the end of summer, adults (sometimes pupae) overwinters in pupal cells. Life-cycle 2-3 years. Adults, active from April to July, almost never visit flowers and can be found on the wood (fallen, uprooted, or felled host trees etc.) [✧][❖].
