Pyrrhidium sanguineum is distributed from Europe and North Africa to the Transcaucasia and North Iran. In Central Europe it is one of the most common longhorn beetles. It is polyphagous on deciduous trees but it strongly prefers oak (Quercus spp.). The species attacks standing or lying mainly sunlit oak trunks/logs or branches of various diameters from 4 cm to considerable thickness. The larva creates an irregular gallery under the bark and for pupation it creates a flat wide pupal cell shallow in sapwood, with a short exit corridor. In thicker bark it directly pupates, rarely between the bark and sapwood. The life-cycle is 2 years, Milan Sláma also states a one-year development in the conditions of Czechia [❖]. It overwinters in the larval and pupa stages. Rarely, during very warm autumns, new adults can hatch before winter. Adults hatch in the spring and belong to the first spring species. In sunny weather and warm evenings, they run on the bark. Occurrence from March to June.

The depicted living beetles were reared from larva found in a dead oak (Quercus sp.) in Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area (Central Bohemia, Czechia) in winters 2020-2022. The mounted specimen was collected in Gartow environs (Lüchow-Dannenberg district, Lower Saxony, Germany) in spring 1972.
