Anisarthron barbipes, a species occuring mainly in Central Europe, has ben described from Vienna environs (Austria) as Cerambyx Barbipes by Franz von Paula Schrank in 1781 [✧]. A. barbipes is currently a typical species of parks, old tree alleys or gardens, it is less often found in forests (especially agricultural ones, with a lack of old trees). The larvae develop in the dead wood of mostly living deciduous trees (Aesculus, Ulmus, Acer, Juglans, Fagus, Fraxinus, Betula, Sorbus, Populus, Tilia) on previously injured parts without bark, stumps after broken branches, in cavities, etc. The attacked wood, which is typically in the contact with living tissues, is often already damaged by fungi. Larvae can develop several generations in the same wood and amount small oval exit holes on the surface of the wood reveal this infestation. Adults, active from May to July, can be found on host trees during the day but also at night [✮][✳].

Body length:♂♂ 6 - 8 mm / ♀♀ 7.5 - 12.5 mm
Life cycle:2 - 3 years
Adults in:June - July
Host plant:polyphagous in deciduous trees
Distribution:Central Europe, up to Northern Italy and North of Balcan Peninsula (Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Switzerland, Ukraine)

The depicted living beetles were photographed in: (DR) - Víchovská Lhota environs (Víchová nad Jizerou, Semily district, Liberec region, North Bohemia, Czechia) on July 15, 2020; (NR) - Hungary in spring 2021.
