Callidiellum rufipenne, an interesting East-Asian species occuring originally in Japan, Korea and China, has been described as Callidium rufipenne from Japan by Victor Ivanovitsch Motschulsky in 1861 [✧]. At the end of the twentieth century, this species was introduced to Europe, where it gradually spread (currently it is known from Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, France, Italy, Slovenia, and Spain) [❖][▽][✮][✳]. However, it is likely that the range of its occurrence will continue to expand.

The biology of the species is similar to related taxa of the genus Callidium. C. rufipenne larvae develop in weakened, dying or freshly dead coniferous trees (Cryptomeria, Pinus, Abies, Larix, Chamaecyparis, Thuja). The length of the life cycle depends on climatic conditions, it can be one year or two years [✮][✳].

Body length:9 - 15 mm
Life cycle:1 - 2 years
Adults in:April - August
Host plant:polyphagous in coniferous trees (Cryptomeria, Pinus, Abies, Larix, Chamaecyparis, Thuja)
Distribution:introduced from North-East Asia (Japan or China) to South and West Europe (Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, France, Italy, Slovenia, Spain)

Depicted mounted beetles were collected in Tsutsu environs (Tsushima Island, Nagasaki prefecture, Japan) on May 11, 1993.
