Conizonia warnieri, a species occurring in Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, was first described from Constantine environs (Algeria) by Félix Edouard Guérin-Méneville as Saperda cinerea as early as 1841 [❖]. However, due to pre-occupation, the valid name of the species is Phytæcia Warnieri, used by Pierre Hippolyte Lucas in his description of the same taxon published in 1847 [▽].

Conizonia warnieri is a very variable species in both color and body size (between 11 and 21 mm in length), which is also the reason for its many synonyms. The larva develops in the roots of Centaurae, often in meadows or pastures of mountainous regions. Adults, active from March to May, sometimes fly or walk on the ground but they can be often found under the basal leaves of the host plant where they mate. [✧][★]

Body length:11 - 21 mm
Life cycle:1 year
Adults in:March - May
Host plant:Centaurea pullala, Centaurea nana
Distribution:Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia

The depicted mounted beetles were collected in Mischliffen environs (N33°26′ W05°04′; 1905 m a.s.l., Middle Atlas Mts., 10 km E Azrou, Ifrane province, Fès-Meknès region, Morocco) on May 12-13, 2012 (♂) / May 15-19, 2011 (♀). The living beetles were collected on an yellow Centaurea (probably C. nana) close to the previously mentioned locality on May 21, 2022.
