Crossotus subocellatus, a remarkable desert species occuring in Arabian peninsula and Africa, has been described from Obock environs (Djibouti) as Dichostates subocellatus by Léon Marc Herminie Fairmaire in 1886 [✩]. Larvae of C. subocellatus develop in wood of dying or freshly dead Vachellia species. Pupation occurs directly in the larval gallery without prior creating of a pupal cell. Adults, active in autumn and spring (depends on region), can be found on freshly felled, dead or dying host trees. [✮]

The depicted mounted male was reared from a larva found in Souss Masse Draa (35 km SE of Zagorawas, Morocco) on May 7, 2018; the mounted female was reared from a larva found in Vachellia in M'Ssici (Mecissi) environs (840 m a.s.l., Alnif Cercle, Tinghir Province, Drâa-Tafilalet Region, Morocco) in June 2008. The depicted living beetles were reared from a larva found in Vachellia branches in Morocco in June 2022.Collected by our friends Milan Šárovec, Petr Kabátek and Petr Jelínek
