Gaurotes virginea, a relatively common European montane and submontane species, has been described from Sweden as Leptura virginea by Carl Linné in 1758 [✮]. Its nominate subspecies is found mainly in central and northern Europe, where in some countries it can be found together with the G. virginea thalassina subspecies. However, the status of both taxons requires further study, as according to many authors they are merely color forms of the nominate subspecies. The classification into the genus/subgenus Gaurotes or Carilla also varies according to the opinions of individual entomologists.
Larval development takes place in dying or dead conifers (prefers Picea, but also in Abies, Pinus, Larix). Females lay eggs in cracks in the bark of standing and fallen tree trunks and branches and the larvae then feed subcortically. Before the second overwintering, the larvae create exit holes through which they leave the host tree and fall to the ground. They pupate in pupal cells in the soil, shallowly below the surface at a depth of up to 5 cm. The life cycle is two years. Adults, active from May to August, are diurnal and anthophilous [❖][✧].
Body length: 7 - 13 mm Life cycle: 2 years Adults in: May - August Host plant: polyphagous in coniferous trees (prefers Picea, but also in Abies, Pinus, Larix) Distribution: Austria, Czechia, France, Germany, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Sweden
The depicted beetles were photographed on flowers in: (NR) - Hungary July 12, 2020; (DR) - Laax environs (Surselva district, Graubünden canton, Switzerland) on August 1, 2018; (MH)- in Spišská Nová Ves environs (Spišská Nová Ves district, Košice region, Slovakia) on June 24, 2017.Collected by Nikola Rahmé, Daniel Rydzi and Michal Hoskovec
