Idactus coquereli, a species occuring in Arabian Peininsula and East Africa, has been described from Eritrea as Dichostathes Coquereli by Léon Marc Herminie Fairmaire in 1890 [✧]. I. iranicus, decribed by Stephen Breuning from Iran in 1975 [❖] is currently considered synonym with I. coquereli [✳]. I. coquereli is a highly variable species in terms of coloration, size and antenna length. I. coquereli is a nocturnal species and occasionally comes to light. Adults can rather be collected on their host plants at night.
Body length: 8 – 13.5 mm Life cycle: 1 year [?] Adults in: May – July Host plant: polyphagous in broadleaf trees Distribution: United Arab Emirates, Iran, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Africa (Ethiopia, Somalia, Djibouti, Kenya)
Depicted mounted beetles were:
- ♂A+♀A – reared from larva/pupa found in Jatropha dhofarica in wadi 2.5 km NW Rakhyut (N16°45′12″ E53°23′56″; 30 m a.s.l., Dhofar governorate, Oman) on September 28, 2025;
- ♂B – collected in Wādī an Nu‘mān (20 km W of At Taif/ اَلطَّائِفُ; N21°16′2″ E40°13′15″; 820 m a.s.l., Mecca province, Saudi Arabia) on March 15–29, 2023;
- ♀C – collected and using a light trap in wadi 10 km SW Al Jarda (N22°59′4″ E58°5′36″; 587 m a.s.l., Ash Sharqiyah governorate, Oman) on March 9, 2023.
The depicted living beetle was reared from larva feeding in Jatropha dhofarica in Wadi Athawq (13 m a.s.l.; 2 km NW of Maghsail beach, Dhofar Governorate, Oman) in September 2018.
