Paraclytus excultus, a stricly insular species occuring in southern Kurile islands and Japan only, has been described by Henry Walter Bates in 1884 [❖]. Species inhabits broad-leaved and mixed forests of varying density. Emergence of adults begins in first half May and continues to August. During this period beetles can be found on the host trees, rarely visit flowers. Females lay eggs laid in bark and wood crevices on thick trunks of standing but dead or dying trees, sometimes on dry branches of viable deciduous trees. Larvae create longitudinal galleries in the wood from bottom upward at a depth up to 5.0 cm and fill them compactly with fine frass. Pupal cells, located in upper layer of wood, are created at end of gallery in July-August (after the first or second over wintwring) longitudinal to trunk. Young adults hatch in the second half of August and in September and overwinter in pupal cells until first warm weeks of the next spring (depends on the locality, May/June). Life cycle two or three years. [✧].

Body length:11 - 14 mm
Life cycle:2 - 3 years
Adults in:May - August
Host plant:polyphagous in deciduous trees (Phellodendron, Acer, Alnus, Sorbus, Morus, Fagus, Quercus, Zelkova)
Distribution:Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu) and Kuriles (Iturup, Kunashir)

The depicted beetles were collected in Makabemachi-hatori (462 m a.s.l., Mt. Tsukuba, Sakuragawa city environs, Ibaraki prefecture, Kantō region, Honshu island, Japan) on May 10, 2020.
