Pogonocherus (Pogonocherus) hispidus, probably the most common European member of Pogonocherus genus, is a Western Palaearctic species, widespread from North Africa to Transcaucasia. Larvae, which are extremely polyphagous, develop in dead or dying twigs/thin stalks (6 - 20 mm) of numerous deciduous trees and shrubs (e.g. Castanea, Fagus, Quercus, Alnus, Corylus, Carpinus, Ulmus, Morus, Ficus, Juglans, Rosa, Crataegus, Malus, Sorbus, Prunus, Staphylea, Cornus, Hedera, Ilex, Euonymus, Frangula, Rhamnus, Viscum, Salix, Populus, Tilia, Nerium, Viburnum, Sambucus, Fraxinus). The larvae feed subcortically and create relatively wide flat galleries. If the twig/stem with a thin bark is heavily infested by larvae, the bark will weaken and it will start to peel off and fall off. Pupation in pupal cell created in pith wood during the summer, life-cycle one or two years. Adults emerge from late summer to autumn and overwinter in the pupal cells or leave host tree and overwinter in forest litter, under bark scales etc. Adults are active in Central Europe from late spring to late summer and can be beaten from host plants, in warmer regions their activity begins in early spring [✩][✧].
