Pseudogaurotina excellens, rare and endangered species endemic to the Carpathians, has been described as Pachyta excellens from Vrátná dolina (Malá Fatra Mts., Slovakia) by Károly Brancsik in 1874 [✮]. Typical habitats of this species include mountain meadows, pastures, and the edges of open woodlands with honeysuckle growth. Larval development occurs in the stems and roots of living Lonicera shrubs. The larva feeds on wood and under the bark and usually pupates just below the surface. When laying eggs, the female prefers shrubs that have been damaged, e.g., by livestock grazing, or where this species has previously developed. Infested stems or branches are often conspicuous due to visible swellings caused by calluses at the feeding sites and exit holes. In healthy, robust shrubs—which often form entire stands—development is rare. The life cycle 2 – 3 years. Adults, active in June–July, are diurnal and can be found on the host plants. They usually sit motionless on the stems and leaves of Lonicera, especially in fine weather, but often even in the rain; it is rarely possible to see them in flight. They do not visit flowers [✧][❖].
