Stictoleptura variicornis, a species of North-Palaearctic forest zone occuring from Baltic Sea coast to Japan, has been described from Latvia as Leptura variicornis by Johann Wilhelm Dalman in 1817 [▽]. S. variicornis, one of the most common longhorn beetles in Siberia and Russian Far East, belongs among rare and sporadic species in Europe. Its larvae develop in thick-trunked dead standing or uprooted trees, as well as stumps of various coniferous and deciduous trees. Larvae initially feed subcortically, later enter the wood creating there longitudinal galleries plugged densely with frass. Pupation from May to July after the second or third overwintering in pupal cell in wood. Adults, active from June to August, are diurnal and anthophilous [✧].

Body length:♂♂ 14 - 19 mm / ♀♀ 16 - 3 mm
Life cycle:2 - 3 years
Adults in:June - August
Host plant:polyphagous in both of coniferous and deciduous trees (e.g. Abies, Picea, Pinus, Larix, Tilia, Betula, Salix)
Distribution:Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Ukraine, North China, Japan, Kazakhstan, Korea, Mongolia

The depicted beetles (♂ 17 mm / ♀ 21 mm) were collected in Lazovsky Nature Reserve (Лазовский заповедник; N43°13.371′ E133°59.310′, Lazovsky District, Primorsky Krai, Far Eastern Federal District, Russia) on August 14-16, 2007.
