Xylosteus spinolae, not very abundant and due to its secretive lifestyle relatively unknown species, occurs from southern Central Europe through the Balkans to Turkey. It was described from Rumelia (south of Bulgaria) by by Imre Frivaldszky in 1837 [✧]. X. spinolae larvae develop the wood of the lower parts of the stems and the roots, also in thick branches of host trees (predominantly in Corylus avellana). Life cycle 2 years. Adults, active from April to July, are crepuscular/nocturnal and can be found on the host trees or attracted to light traps.

The depicted mounted beetles were reared from larvae collected in Karawanken Alpen Mts. (South Austria). The living beetles were reared from larvae found in dead hazel (Corylus avelana) in: (DR) – Trögern Gorge (Eisenkappel-Vellach environs, Völkermarkt district, Carinthia, Austria) on November 11, 2024; (TN) - Velebit Mts. (Croatia) in 2014.
